DevBlog #15 – Post early access

Hi everyone,

I’ve finally got some time to write a blog post for Shimmer following it’s early access release at the beginning of the month!

I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has played the game so far and for all of the feedback that has been received.

This blog post is going to focus on the changes that have been introduced since the last update:

Bug fixes:

As you can imagine with an early access release I’ve spent quite a large amount of time tackling bugs that were reported and adding small fixes to existing game play elements.

The content changes:

New foliage:

Following feedback I decided to add some more foliage to the islands to try and improve the overall feel. I’m pretty happy with the additions so far but there is plenty more to add to the islands in general.

I will be spending a fair amount of time in the coming weeks adding to the ambience of the game as well as tackling the performance issues this will bring.


New underwater coral areas:

As well as additional foliage to islands I have also spent time creating new underwater coral areas to explore. These can be found around the edge of the island chains.

Again like the foliage there are still plenty to be added in the coming weeks.


New start menu:

I also decided that the start menu needed a change so I came up with the below which I feel is a definite improvement on the last original.


Survival Bed:

A new item also made it’s way into Shimmer. The survival bed allows you to progress time to simulate sleeping. This was a requested feature following feedback that nights were a bit too long and too dark.

I have also increased the brightness of nighttime slightly so it is a bit easier to go hunting in the dark!


The focus:

Over the next few weeks the focus will be on improving the ambience and playable areas of Shimmer by adding in new foliage and underwater coral areas.

I will also be making some optimisations to the game improve the overall FPS.

I will also be continuing to monitor and engage with the community for feedback and feature requests and implementing them as I go along.
